A first-time visitor's guide to Bangkok

For a taste of Bangkok, you cannot miss the Chatuchak Weekend Market. This popular market offers a great range of souvenirs and other items for your home. Plus, there's no entry fee. There are many different stalls to explore. You'll be able to find something you love, from clothing to jewelry to food.

Chatuchak Weekend Market

The Chatuchak Weekend Market is an old-world marketplace in Bangkok where you can buy fresh produce, handcrafted goods, and clothing. Unlike other markets, this one does not follow any set operating hours, meaning you can stroll around at your leisure. The market is open every weekend from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and sometimes even until late at night. To get to the market, take the subway or sky train.

The market is located right outside of the city center. Visitors should wear comfortable clothing and shoes, as the area is very busy and you will spend a good amount of time walking around. It's also a good idea to pack a backpack and bring cash, as many stalls only accept cash.

Museum of Contemporary Art

Grand Palace

The Grand Palace is located at the heart of Bangkok, right beside the Chao Phraya River. The best way to reach the palace is to take a river taxi, which not only offers a more pleasant trip but also a great view of the city's skyline. You can board a river taxi from the Sathorn Pier, which is located at the foot of the Grand Palace, and pay as little as 15 baht ($0.50 USD) per person. The ride takes around 20 minutes.

The Grand Palace is a vast complex consisting of many buildings. The interior is beautifully kept, with intricate murals and large green gardens. You can learn about Thai royalty by visiting this magnificent palace.

Museum of Contemporary Art

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Bangkok is the largest museum dedicated to contemporary Thai art. However, it is not a direct counterpart to the MOMA in New York City. Visitors from around the world can visit the museum for free. Moreover, the museum has several exhibition rooms where they can see various types of works by Thai artists.

The MOCA is located in the northern area of the city, about 6.5 km from the Mo Chit BTS Skytrain Station. A taxi ride to the museum is the easiest way to get here.

Sak Yant Tattoos

To experience the ancient art of tattooing, it is essential to visit a Sak Yant tattoo studio. This traditional style of tattooing is highly skilled and requires a great deal of training and merit. The tattoos at Sak Yant are unique and crafted with the highest quality materials and inks. They are also meant to last a lifetime.

It is not unusual for up to 40 to 100 people to line up each day at Wat Bang Phra Temple for a Sak Yant tattoo. Customers queue on concrete floors in the intense heat of the temple, and sometimes wait for hours. In fact, it is not uncommon for tourists to get a Sak Yant tattoo in Bangkok for the first time. However, there are several ways to ensure your safety while visiting Sak Yant in Bangkok.

Siriraj Medical Museum

Siriraj Medical Museum

The Siriraj Medical Museum, also known as the Museum of Death, is an intriguing place to visit in Bangkok. The museum is a valuable resource for medical professionals and students. While the museum may not be the best place to go for a romantic getaway, it's still an interesting and educational place to visit.

This museum houses a variety of exhibits, including those dealing with the death of a patient. The museum is housed in the former Siriraj hospital, which was founded in 1886 by King Rama V. At the time, traditional Thai medicine dominated the field. However, modern medicine was taught at the hospital. Its name is a nod to the American physician A.G. Ellis, who helped lay the foundation for pathology in the Kingdom by collecting disease-identified specimens. The museum contains many exhibits that are quite confronting, especially the ones that show babies.

Unique guided tours in Bangkok

If you are looking for an interesting tour of Bangkok, you should take a unique one. For example, you can take a cycling tour along the Chaophraya river, where you will have the opportunity to see the city's historic buildings from a different perspective. You will also learn about the development of Bangkok as the capital city of Thailand. A unique tour like this will pack in a lot of history into a short amount of time.

Another unique tour is the night tour of the city, where you can enjoy tuk-tuk rides through the city. This tour will also include a visit to the local night markets, where you can sample the local food and drink. You will also have the chance to see the city's temples illuminated at night.

Or Tor Kor Market

The markets in Bangkok are an important part of the Bangkok experience, and there is a market in Bangkok for everyone. The Chatuchak Weekend Market is my personal favourite, as are the Or Tor Kor Market and Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market. You can visit them on your own or sign up for a guided tour.

Another unique highlight of the city is the Emerald Buddha Temple. This Buddhist temple is located near the Chao Phraya River. The tower of Wat Arun is the highest grade first-class Buddhist temple in Thailand. This temple is a perfect place to finish your Bangkok tour.
