One day itinerary in Parma
Teatro Regio
One of the best things to do in Parma is attend an opera performance at the historic Teatro Regio. This beautiful neoclassic building has been entertaining Parma's citizens for over a century. Verdi himself was born nearby, and many of his famous operas have been performed here. Contemporary performances are of high quality, and there is a Verdi festival on occasion.
The opera season in Parma runs from April to December, and a festival is held in October. You can also check out the National Gallery, located in the historic center of town. It is home to some of the city's most important collections, including works by Parmigianino, Correggio, Leonardo, and Van Dyck.
Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Parma
The Museo Archeologico Nazionali di Parma is an excellent art museum that houses artworks from the 12th to 18th centuries. The museum features an exhibition of works from the Italian school of painting. The large galleries feature many examples of works from the 12th to 18th centuries.
Founded in 1760, the Museo Archeologico Nazionali di Parma is located in the piazza della Pilotta in Parma. It occupies a south wing of the Palazzo della Pilotta, a building designed by Giovanni Boscoli for Ottavio Farnese. The museum's first exhibition features the Marbles of Gonzaga. Other works on display include the Bronze Age of Parma and the 2nd Iron Age funerary complex of Frarore. In addition, there is a section dedicated to the Roman Period. Free admission is offered for European Union citizens, journalists and children under eighteen. It's also open to the public on the first Sunday of every month.
Piazza Garibaldi
Piazza Garibaldi is the main square in Parma. This is a great place to relax and people watch. Though street performers are rare in Parma, there are plenty of benches for people to sit and enjoy the sights.
Another popular place in Parma is the Baptistery, which contains 75 decorated panels depicting various animals. It is always a hit with kids. Legend has it that the Devil once left a mark on the South-East portion of the Baptistry, kicking it because it was too beautiful.
Parco Ducale
If you're looking for a place to take the kids for a day of fun, then Parco Ducale is a must-see. This large park has 3.2 kilometers of tree-lined avenues. It was originally constructed in 1561 by Ottavio Farnese, and subsequent rulers added to the park and its gardens. Many people exercise here, but picnicking is also a popular activity. It's important to bring your own food and a blanket. Services may be limited, so plan ahead.
Another of the best things to do in Parma is to go to the Barilia area. The city's Barilia district has recently been redeveloped. The city's historic center is home to the Parma Center for the Arts. It's a unique space for visitors with a passion for art or a creative goal. A visit to the center will boost your happiness and relieve stress.
Shrine of Santa Maria Della Steccata
The Shrine of Santa Maria Della Steccato in Parma, Italy, is an elegant renaissance building. It was the first centrally planned church in Parma. The name Steccata dates back to the XIV century, and comes from the name of a house in Parma that contained a miraculous image of Saint John the Baptist. The sanctuary is built around this image, which is preserved in the church today.
The sanctuary is surrounded by a beautiful chapel. Inside, a fresco of the Madonna Suckling the Child painted by an anonymous late 14th century artist is displayed on the altar. Behind the presbitery, you will find the Knight's Choir and a Christ Risen sculpture by Andrea Spinelli. You can also visit the sacresty, where you can see the tomb of the Farnese and Bourbon dukes of Parma.
