Taronga Zoo

Founded in 1916, the Taronga Zoo is a popular attraction in Sydney, Australia. Located on Bradley's Head, Mosman, the zoo represents more than four thousand animals. It is home to a diverse collection of native and exotic animals, and has become one of Australia's most famous attractions.

  • The zoo has a large collection of rare and endangered animals, including a troop of 21 chimpanzees. It has been involved in captive breeding programs for more than 50 years. The Taronga Zoo has successfully bred koalas, mountain pygmy possums, brush-tailed bettongs, and parma wallabies.
  • The zoo is also home to an extensive bird collection. Taronga Zoo is a member of the CAPA Sydney program. This program helps to conserve wildlife. The Taronga Zoo is also involved in an off-display program. This program has helped to save hundreds of thousands of coral spores.
  • The zoo has bred several other species, including a rare Francois' langur monkey, and has bred New Zealand kiwi. In addition, Taronga Zoo is one of the few zoos in Australia that breeds a platypus.
  • The Taronga Zoo is known for its famous Seals for the Wild presentation. Thousands of people have come to Taronga Zoo to see the seals. Taronga Zoo is also home to a chimpanzee community, and a troop of red pandas.
Taronga Zoo Australia
  • The zoo is located on 52 acres. It is only twelve minutes from the city by ferry. In addition to the animals, Taronga Zoo has been involved in conservation programs for more than fifty years. It has a unique chimpanzee community that is recognized internationally as the most natural.
  • The zoo has also been involved in many conservation captive breeding programs. The Taronga Zoo has helped to save several endangered species. They have released 58 captive-bred regent honeyeaters into the wild. In addition, Taronga Zoo is a partner in a five-year project with primatologist Jane Goodall. The zoo has also partnered with the Tchimpounga Rehabilation Centre in Congo to care for 140 rescued chimpanzees.

There is also a rainforest aviary, which is home to fruit pigeons, honeyeaters, bowerbirds, and lyrebirds. This is the first zoo in Australia to use an open-range principle.

  • The Taronga Zoo has been home to many famous humans. It is home to Koko, who came to the zoo in February 1993. The zoo has also been home to Prince Harry and his family. In April 2014, Prince William and Kate visited Taronga Zoo. Their son Prince George was eight months old when they visited. They also visited the bilby exhibit, which is now called Bilby George in honor of Prince George.
  • The zoo also has a number of aviaries, including the Australian Rainforest Aviary. It has beautiful birds with breathtaking plumage.
  • Taronga Zoo also has a night safari, which offers up-close animal encounters. Visitors can get closer to koalas, giraffes, and other animals during special times. Guests can also buy souvenir photos of their animal encounters. They can also download the Taronga Zoo app to learn more about the zoo and the shows. The app also gives visitors a map of the zoo and directions to all the animals.
