Located 12 kilometers north of Gdansk, Sopot is a popular seaside resort in Poland. The city is surrounded by wood-and-earth fortifications, and was once a prosperous settlement. In the early Middle Ages, the people of Sopot made a living from fishing. However, after the foundation of a ducal fort in Gdansk in the 13th century, Sopot's prosperity was lost. However, it recovered relatively quickly. After World War II, Sopot returned to Poland, and it is now a popular holiday resort.
