Waitomo Caves

Located on the North Island of New Zealand, Waitomo Caves are one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. A number of hotels and tour providers offer excursions to the caves, which are located in Waitomo, about two hours' drive from Auckland.

Waitomo Caves New Zealand

Waitomo Caves are comprised of hundreds of limestone caverns. They formed in the Oligocene period, around 30 million years ago. The limestone rock contains fossilized marine organisms. The limestone is also brittle, so it has worn out over time. Waitomo Caves are a beautiful and unique sight in New Zealand.

Waitomo Caves were originally discovered by Tane Tinorau, a local Maori chief, in the 1800s. He accompanied surveyor Fred Mace on his explorations into the cave. They were both able to enter the cave on a raft made of flax flower stalks. They discovered the upper level entrance to the cave and led groups of tourists into the cave for a small fee. This was the first time visitors were able to enter the cave.

Today, Waitomo Caves are a popular tourist attraction, especially for glow worms. In fact, thousands of travelers visit the caves each year to see the luminous bugs. The glow worms are beautiful and fascinating, and they create incredible lights in the caves. These insects are New Zealand's endemic species. They have been around for millions of years, and have seen dinosaurs come and go. Glow worms are carnivores, which means they feed on other insects. Their bioluminescent tails are a light source, and chemicals in their tails react with oxygen to create a blue light.

There are also other interesting residents of the caves. One is the cave cricket, which is endemic to New Zealand. Cave crickets are large insects, and they are the world's heaviest insect. They also have bioluminescent tails, and they attract other insects by using bioluminescence. Cave crickets are mainly found in caves, and the Waitomo Caves are home to about 70 species.

These caves are also known as glow in the dark fly larvae caves. These caves were originally taken over by the government for several years, but they were eventually returned to the Maori. They are now protected by a special Scientific Advisory Group. The caves are monitored closely.

Waitomo Caves are located on the southern part of the Waikato region, about 12 kilometers northwest of Te Kuiti. The region has more than 300 limestone caverns. The limestone in these caves has deteriorated over time, so they are very fragile. The limestone in the caves was originally formed by seashells and bones from ancient marine animals. It took thousands of years for the limestone rock to form.

The caves are very damp, so it is important to wear warm layers. Waitomo Caves are also cold, so it is a good idea to pack a light jacket. These caves are also known for their spectacular stalactites, which are formed when the limestone is infused with water.
