Meteora

Located in Greece, Meteora is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is a natural beauty and has a religious significance. It is known for its rock formations, which were sculpted by natural forces over millions of years. These formations are made of sandstone and conglomerate. The area was once home to a hermit community. These monks used the rock formations to mark their locations. They built monasteries in fissures in the rock tower.

Meteora Greece

The monks at Meteora lived in isolation and depended heavily on locals for their needs. These hermits would gather every Sunday to worship and pray. They would also gather to provide food and provisions to the monks in their community. They would gather together at the foot of the rocks where they had built a chapel.

In the 14th century, attacks from the Turkish Empire caused the hermit monks to seek higher ground. The monks were only able to gather together on special occasions, like the Sunday. These monks would live in caves, but they would also seek out the caves for their spiritual needs. This was the first organized monastic community at Meteora. This was the first time that women were allowed in the community. The first woman to visit Meteora was Queen Marie of Romania in 1921.

The monks at Meteora have built more than twenty monasteries throughout the valley. These monasteries are built on the sandstone and conglomerate formations of Meteora. They are a little over one thousand feet above the ground. The area is a beautiful valley with a sweeping view of the surrounding mountains. The monks at Meteora are unique because they are all dedicated to different causes. Most of the monasteries are male-only, though there are also two convents with nuns.

One of the most famous monasteries is St. George. According to legend, Saint George caused a man to be paralyzed. The monks at Meteora believe that this event was the beginning of the end of the dark ages. The monks hope to attain salvation for themselves and their supporters. They are able to do this by uniting their prayers throughout the day. The monks at Meteora also believe that their lives are connected to the physical sun, which they pray to every day.

Meteora was once home to a community of 30 monasteries. The hermit monks of Meteora would gather together every Sunday to worship and pray. They would gather at the foot of the rocks where they had been built a chapel. In the 14th century, a monk from Mount Athos came to Meteora and built the Great Meteoron monastery. This monastery was the largest community. It was home to flocks of monks and animals.

The Great Meteoron is still an active monastery. There are also six other active monasteries, including the Rousanou monastery. These monasteries were enlisted by UNESCO in 1988. The Great Meteoron has over 300 steps. The Rousanou monastery has over 140 steps.

The hermit monks at Meteora lived isolated from the outside world for most of their lives. The monks had to find ways to get to the top of the rock spires, and they would do this by using ropes, ladders, and nets. These methods were not too difficult, but they did require a lot of strength and stamina.
