Alnwick Castle

Located in Northumberland, England, Alnwick Castle has been home to the Percy family for 700 years. It is the second largest inhabited castle in England, and has undergone numerous renovations over the years. Aside from being home to the Duke of Northumberland, it also houses the Alnwick Garden, the world's largest treehouse and a collection of more than 16,000 books catalogued in its library.

A number of films have been shot at Alnwick, including Ivanhoe, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Downton Abbey, Becket, and Transformers: The Last Knight. A statue of Harry Hotspur, one of the protagonists in Shakespeare's King Henry IV (Part 1), is also located here. It was built to honor the character, who was born at the castle. Alnwick also plays a role in the filming of many television series.

Alnwick Castle England

During the medieval period, Alnwick was a county town. It was also the site of a priory. Parts of the medieval town wall still stand. To the north of the castle, a small park is located straddling the River Aln. The larger park on the other side of the river contains the remains of a medieval priory. The Percy family also had homes at Warkworth Castle, Prudhoe Castle and Syon House.

The Alnwick Garden is a formal garden in which the cascanning fountain serves as the center of the garden. The treehouse is located in the treehouse complex, which is one of the largest in the UK. There is also a bar and restaurant located in the treehouse. The garden is run by a charitable trust independent from the Northumberland Estates.

One of the most interesting features of Alnwick Garden is the Poison Garden, which contains plants such as hemlock and euphorbia. The garden was designed in February 2005. There is also a Christmas rose and a copper snake in the garden.

One of the first phases of development at Alnwick Castle included the construction of a fountain. It was designed in part by Sir Michael Hopkins, who was involved in the design of the tourist center. A pavilion was also constructed to serve as the visitor center. A 15th-century grammar school was also left over from the medieval period. In the 18th century, a Georgian master architect, Robert Adam, renovated the castle.

Alnwick Castle has a number of rooms, including the Great Hall, the library and the drawing room. These rooms are open to the public during guided tours. Six rooms are also open to the public. Most of the other rooms are used by the Percy family or by St. Cloud State University's branch campus.

The Percy family is very involved in British history, and many of their members have connections with England. Lord Henry Percy was suspected of being involved in the Gunpowder Plot and was later imprisoned in the Tower of London. He also took part in the Rising of the North against Queen Elizabeth I. During the wars of the Roses, castles were rarely attacked.
