The Palm Jumeirah

Despite its size, the Palm Jumeirah isn't really an island. Instead, it is a five-kilometre-long crescent surrounded by a reef. The crescent contains a large number of hotels and luxurious villas. The crescent also serves as a breakwater, protecting the Palm Jumeirah from storms. It is also the location of the Atlantis resort. The Palm Jumeirah is a world-famous architectural landmark and is the eighth wonder of the world. It is located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The Palm Jumeirah  Dubai UAE

Construction of Palm Jumeirah began in 2001. It was planned to be the largest of three artificial islands that would be built in the region. The other two islands are Palm Deira and Palm Jebel Ali. They will feature marinas, sports facilities and shopping malls. Palm Deira will be the commercial hub of the archipelago. Palm Jebel Ali will be a place for families and adults to enjoy.

Palm Jumeirah is the first of the Palm Islands and is surrounded by a sea of 120 million cubic metres of sand. This makes Palm Jumeirah the largest man-made island in the world. The island is connected to Dubai via a 1.4-kilometre bridge. The Palm Jumeirah also features several luxury hotels, water parks and beach clubs. The island is also home to the famous monorail that runs 4.8 kilometers from the mainland. Thousands of passengers use the monorail daily. In 2007, the first residents began moving into Palm Jumeirah.

The Palm Jumeirah is also known for its technological advancement. The project started with the dredging of hundreds of millions of cubic tonnes of sand from the sea floor. The sand was then used to form the upper parts of the new manmade archipelagoes. In order to determine the shape of the Palm Jumeirah, high-tech GPS systems were attached to dredgers. Hundreds of feasibility studies were carried out by qualified engineers. In addition, expert divers explored the seabed and the formation of the rocks.

During the construction of the Palm Jumeirah, no concrete or steel was used. Instead, the breakwaters and the crescent were built using sand. These breakwaters protect the island from storms and typhoons. The breakwaters are made from medium and small rocks, geotextile fibre, and sand. They are also used to protect the island from seasonal'shamal' winds.

The Palm Jumeirah is located in the Persian Gulf. The area is a five-kilometre-long crescent, and its length is accompanied by a two-metre-wide wall. The sands used in Palm Jumeirah's construction can circle the earth three times. The crescent is surrounded by a 5.5-million-cubic-metre rock breakwater. This breakwater is seven miles long and provides easy circulation of water.

The Palm Jumeirah has a southwestern part that is being developed into the world's largest night souk. A monorail runs from the mainland to the island, making it the first monorail in the Middle East. A transit monorail also runs between the two islands. The monorail is used by 20,000 passengers each day. In 2009, the first hotels opened on the Crescent, and by 2010, 28 hotels were open.
