Kruger National Park
Amongst the many national parks in the world, the Kruger National Park is a favourite among tourists and locals alike. It is also one of the world's greatest wildlife reserves, home to the Big Five. Here are some amazing facts about Kruger National Park that will make your visit to this park unforgettable.
The park is located in the north-eastern part of South Africa, in the provinces Limpopo and Mpumalanga. The park is naturally bound by the Crocodile River, and borders Mozambique to the west. Its area is 19,485 km2 (7,523 sq mi), and its average width is 65 km (40 mi).
The park was named after the late president Paul Kruger, who was born in 1825 and grew up on a farm in the Transvaal. He inherited the family farm, but in 1842, his father moved the family to the Eastern Transvaal. When Kruger was 16, he emigrated to Rustenburg. He settled in the area and became a member of the Transvaal executive council. In 1876, he became the vice-president.
Kruger's political leadership was well-known. He negotiated the Pretoria Convention of 1881, which ended the first Anglo Boer War. Kruger then traveled to Europe to re-evaluate the convention. He met with Bismarck and acquired many European allies. He also spoke with Bismarck on the occasion of a visit to England. In 1883, he went to England to negotiate the revision of the Pretoria Convention. He stayed there for three years, after which he left for Switzerland. He died at the age of 79, of heart failure.
The park is home to the only viable pack of wild dogs in South Africa. It is also home to the Big Five, as well as over 12,000 elephants. It is one of the most popular parks in the world and receives around a million visitors each year. There are six walking trails in the park, which are great for getting close to the wildlife.
The park is also home to numerous archaeological sites. The park contains 130 recorded rock art sites. These sites are used to demonstrate the development of stone tools and refined utensils. The park is also home to 250 cultural heritage sites.
The park has four main veld types, based on the geological substrates and rainfall gradient. These veld types are open bushland, woodland, savanna, and grassland. The northern part of the park is largely covered by savanna and shrub mopane, and the southern area has open bushland.
The park's biggest attractions include the Elephant Museum, which offers a range of wildlife displays. It also has fun games and information for children. The park has six walking trails, and visitors can even try mountain biking. Besides wildlife, there are also local artifacts to discover, including engravings, rock paintings and San rock art.
The park's first warden, James Stevenson-Hamilton, was a member of the 6th Enniskillen Dragoons. He served as the park's warden for forty-four years. He also fought tooth-and-nail to save the park. Eventually, he retired from his post in 1946. In honor of his service, the park's airport is named after him.
