Apartheid Museum

Located in the Gold Reef City campus of Ormonde, the Apartheid Museum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Johannesburg. This unique museum focuses on the history and culture of South Africa. The building contains 22 individual exhibition areas. Most of the museum is dedicated to the topic of apartheid. However, there are a few temporary exhibitions that also focus on other themes.

Apartheid Museum Johannesburg

Apartheid was a political system in South Africa that was designed to separate the races. It was formally introduced in 1948, and it was officially abolished in 1994. During this time, over 20 million people in South Africa were made second-class citizens. Many of these people were non-white.

The apartheid system was established by a group of white political leaders known as the National Party. They implemented 148 apartheid laws between 1949 and 1971. This resulted in the death of many people in South Africa. Some of these people were murdered or tortured to death. Others committed suicide. The majority of the internal leadership of both opposition parties were jailed by 1964.

The Apartheid Museum uses multimedia presentations and film footage to show visitors the horrors of apartheid. Visitors also see original artifacts and the writings of Nelson Mandela. In addition, the museum pays tribute to the people who died in the struggle for freedom.

Apartheid Museum is located on seven hectares of land on the outskirts of Johannesburg. The building itself cost around R80 million to build. It is the world's only museum dedicated to the subject of apartheid. The museum is managed by an independent board of trustees and relies on donations and sponsorship.

The museum was opened in 1994. It contains four main exhibitions on apartheid. Other main exhibitions focus on violence and homelands. The museum also has several temporary exhibitions that cover different themes. The museum is open from 9 AM to 5 PM. The entry fee depends on the person. It is best to take a red bus tour to explore the museum.

The apartheid system was a racially segregated system that was created by the National Party to keep white people in a separate group from the non-whites. The racially segregated society was created in the early 1900s when gold miners began to arrive in Johannesburg. These miners were racially diverse and mixed together. This led to the racial divisions that would eventually result in apartheid.

The Apartheid Museum aims to help South Africa overcome the past and move forward into a better future. It is one of the main attractions on day tours of Johannesburg. Visitors will gain a deeper understanding of South Africa and its history.

Apartheid Museum is open from 9 AM to 5 PM. Visitors can enter the museum through a white or non-white doorway. They will be assigned an entry ticket based on their race. The museum uses the race to identify visitors. However, they will also have to produce their identity documents to enter the building.
