One day itinerary in Port Arthur

One of the most interesting attractions in Tasmania is the City of Port Arthur, a 19th-century penal settlement that has been preserved as an open-air museum. You can walk through the ruins of the Separate Prison, which once housed the mentally-punished inmates, and see the Convict Church built by the inmates.

Convict Church

While you're in Port Arthur, don't forget to visit the Port Arthur Museum, which houses a permanent collection and half a dozen temporary exhibits. The museum is open Monday through Saturday. It features a variety of artifacts, local history, and a fascinating alligator exhibit.

The city is also a great place for foodies, with oyster shacks and farm gates showcasing the local produce. There's even a local chocolate factory. If you're looking for a chocolate treat, check out the Federation Chocolate Factory. There's plenty to do in the city, and there are even a number of tours you can take without a car.

Afterwards, you can visit the Port Arthur Historic Site, a World Heritage-listed site. You'll have access to over 30 historic buildings, most of which are within walking distance of one another. Your tour guide will lead you through the ruins of the colonial city, telling you stories about the hardships of the convicts.

Separate Prison

The town is an important site for Australian history, as it contains the ruins of a notorious penal colony. The town is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city of Port Arthur is a reminder of a time long gone. The town was once home to the infamous 'Dog Line', which guarded the prison from convicts.
